Hey you,
Why did you run away,
Before I could run away myself

Were things that bad,
That you could not hold onto what little we had?
You think you're happy now,
But I am sure that you're wishing things had been different somehow

Hey You, can't you see that I'll be all right,
Hey You, are you thinking we should have tried?

Hey You, we both knew it was time to move on,
Hey You, I don't miss you now that you're gone,
Hey You, was it worth it after so long?
Hey You, can you hear me? I wrote you this...

Mark's Comment:

This one has an interesting history. I originally wrote a very short song called "For What It's Worth" over a year ago; it's a little love song with sparse instrumentation that actually goes back to one of my first relationships - when I was young, dumb, and more than a little insensitive. That song (FWIW) starts off with the line "Hey you, for what it's worth..." and essentially reflects on my regrets in a sort of "pseudo-apology." That song is also on the album.

So anyway, back to this song... One late afternoon I got to messing around with the "Hey You" line and came up with another melody and some new words. After about 2 hours, I had the framework for about 80 percent of a whole new song laid out! Josh came over the next week and I showed him this new, almost complete tune that had come out of nowhere. He seemed to like it, and we got to work on it... the result exceeded both our expectations, I think.

I'm pleased with how this song came out; it's got a wryness in its hindsight hidden beneath the deceptively simple-sounding lyrics - my favorite line: "Were things that bad / That you couldn't hold on to what little we had?"

Josh really helped me find orchestrations and finishing touches that made this song complete. And I'm very proud that it was released on the "Tsunami Projekt" benefit CD - the CD raised $10,000 for victims of the tragedy in Asia, and Josh and I were excited and humbled to be a part of that!

Josh's Comment:

This is another one of Mark's songs. I think he'd been sitting on this one for some time, and decided to bring it to the fold to add a little "din" to it. I'm generally not into love tunes, but admittedly I really like this song a lot; I think it's the most "singable" of the bunch to date; I find myself singing the opening verse over and over again. (Damn you, Mark!)

I'm very proud of the guitar solo. It's definitely the best one I've ever written. I was going for a Pat Martino vibe, and I think I captured it perfectly given my limited ability to play jazz.
